Protestor gives Churchillian speech
More than 150 angry residents filled a public meeting to protest against controversial plans for a new waste tip on the outskirts of Chorley.
A planning application has been submitted to Lancashire County Council by disposal giants Biffa for a new landfill site close to its existing site in Abbey Village.
The move has prompted a furious reaction from residents and the depth of feeling was apparent at a meeting of protest group Biffa Action at the Oak Royal Golf Club, Bury Lane, Withnell, on Wednesday.
During the meeting protester Brian Duckworth called on all residents to oppose what he called an “appalling, enormous, and shattering proposition” to continue using the area for landfill.
Paraphrasing Sir Winston Churchill, he rallied support saying: “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end.
“We shall fight them with our placards, we shall fight them though our councils, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength, whatever the cost may be.
“We shall never surrender, so, ladies and gentlemen, let this be our finest hour.”
This all seems rather unecessarily “over the top” to those working in the area of landfill cqa. With proper restoration which is quality controlled there really is no need for such a level of retoric. These landfills are not so bad…
